Marine Le Pen will win the next French election, the interior minister has warned, a comment that has been seen as a direct challenge to President Emmanuel Macron.
Gerald Darmanin warned that France must get tough on crime or risk opening the door to the right.
"The fact is that in five years, a victory for Ms. Le Pen is very possible. Faced with this, we will only need one candidate," he told La Voix du Nord.
His comments to a regional newspaper came ahead of a meeting on Sunday, where Darmanin is gathering his ministers, parliamentarians and supporters for "an afternoon of reflection".
The comment also comes amid warnings from within Macron's party that his minister's outspoken ambitions for the Elysee are calling into question the cabinet's loyalty.
Darmanin quickly climbed the political career ladder after his election at the age of 29.
As interior minister, Darmanin espouses a hard-line conservative approach to law and order and has clashed with the UK over the migrant crisis.
In his interview on Friday, Darmanin stressed the importance of winning the trust of his working-class and middle-class voter base.
"It is a weak corner of all government parties", said Darmanin.
"The working class takes shelter either in abstention or in the populist vote, especially in the "National Rally", or in the contestation of institutions and democracy. When they no longer believe in the role of the state and politics to have better health, school or reward, it is very disturbing. I want to focus on that," he said.
The meeting in northern France on Sunday, the first of its kind the minister has organized in his six years in government, is seen as an early step in the presidential campaign.
