Doubts and controversies about security after the assassination of Trump

The suspect in the assassination attempt on Donald Trump was a 20-year-old white boy from Pennsylvania: His name was Thomas Matthew Crooks.

According to the FBI it was an attempted murder (there was controversy from the right because some media didn't define it that way from the beginning).

The shooter had no identification: FBI agent Kevin Rojek, speaking to reporters in Butler, Pennsylvania, explained that agents are examining DNA, biometric data, information related to the purchase of the gun and have asked citizens to send crime scene photos and videos.

At the moment, the motive is unknown.

According to the New York Times, the weapon was an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, but that too has not been confirmed by authorities.

Witness: I warned Trump's security about the sniper on the roof

A witness from the scene reported that he had alerted Secret Service agents to a gunman on a nearby roof minutes before the attack.

Speaking to foreign media, the witness, named Greg, said he saw the would-be assassin climb to the top of a building in Butler, Pennsylvania. According to him, this whole scene seemed strange to him, as he says that he could not understand why the former president's security forces did not intervene.

"I was thinking to myself, why is Trump still speaking, why hasn't he been pulled off the stage? The next thing you know, you hear five shots," he said.

The witness is convinced that the shots came from the roof, which he had been looking at for several minutes.

"100 percent, 100 percent," Greg concluded.

Moments later Secret Service agents were heard shouting "the shooter is dead."

The agency confirmed that the incident is being investigated as an attempted assassination.

'A security breach'

Some say this is a security failure. Secret Service protection for Trump had been ramped up recently, as it always does as a candidate approaches his party's nomination and convention, which begins Monday in Milwaukee.

It is not clear how the sniper managed to position himself on a roof outside the perimeter of the gathering, but still close enough.

The rally began at 18:00 local time (midnight in Italy): two or three shots that wounded Trump in the face and ear erupted after 10-15 minutes.

Trump escaped, but one spectator was killed and two others were seriously injured.

President Joe Biden was at his beach house in Delaware, but he flew right into the White House overnight to manage this very difficult moment from there.

Trump left Pennsylvania on his plane soon after.

Accusations against Biden: "Ridiculous hysteria against Trump"

Senator JD Vance, considered a possible choice as Donald Trump's deputy, along with other Republican leaders point the finger at Biden and the Democrats for the attempt to kill Trump.

"For weeks, Democratic leaders have been fomenting a ridiculous hysteria that Donald Trump's re-election victory would be the end of democracy in America," said the Grand Old Party's number two in the House of Representatives, the Italian-American Steve Scalise, himself seriously injured in the 2017 shooting, whose perpetrator, killed by the police, belonged to several anti-Republican groups and had volunteered for the presidential campaign of Senator Bernie Sanders.

"It's clear that we've seen far-left lunatics act out violent rhetoric in the past. This inciting rhetoric must be stopped", he added.

The attack on Mr Trump was the most serious attempt to kill a president or presidential candidate since the assassination of Ronald Reagan in 1981.

This assassination comes in a deeply polarized political atmosphere, just four months before the presidential election and a few days before Mr. Trump is officially nominated as his party's candidate for the Republican Assembly. His campaign said the Assembly would be held as planned.
