When Donald Trump first ran for president, the businessman and TV personality was seen as disruptive. As he faced defeat in the 2020 election, he decided not to accept the election result. Now, as he begins campaigning for the 2024 presidential election, he is touting what he calls his first-term accomplishments, along with new policy plans. VOA correspondent Anita Powell reports from Washington.

Donald Trump is the first official candidate in the 2024 US presidential race. He is using the campaign to sell his vision for America.

Mr. Trump often uses superlatives in his speeches. He did this about his immigration policy:

"We will restore and secure America's borders as we had them before, with the greatest security ever," Mr Trump said.

He also spoke about economic plans and showed his views on the rule of law.

"We will rebuild the greatest economy ever."

"I immediately demand the death penalty for drug and human traffickers," said the former president.

As for himself, he said: "...I have proven that I am one of the most honest and innocent people in our country."

President Joe Biden said he will use the holiday break to discuss with his family whether he will run again.

The White House says Republicans are more interested in winning elections than helping Americans.

"The Republican Party has no plan. They do nothing but political stunts," said Ms. Jean-Pierre.

Historians say that the achievements of the former president are few.

"He has achieved very little in terms of legislation. His greatest achievements were the appointments he made and the attacks he made on people. It's hard to believe that he's going to change American politics when he hasn't done it before," says University of Texas at Austin history professor Jeremi Suri.

Mr. Trump's supporters disagree.

“He was able to build over 800 kilometers of wall on the border with Mexico to stop illegal immigrants. He cut taxes and allowed drilling to provide affordable fuel," said Hogan Gidley, director of the Center for Electoral Integrity and head of the America First Institute.

"He made it clear to everyone that they will face America's strength if they mess with him or his allies in the world. These are all achievements that belong to President Trump."

Mr. Hogan added that the Republican party has learned from the legislative battles of the years when Mr. Trump was president.

"Whoever on the right is elected to lead the White House will from now on work with Congress like no one has before, because they will simply ignore the media because most of America ignores the media," Mr. Gidley said.

One thing everyone agrees on: almost two years before the polls, the campaign to elect the next president has now begun./VOA
