A teenage girl who killed her newborn son by fracturing his skull and suffocating him with cotton wool when he was just 15 was today jailed for a minimum of 12 years at Worcester Crown Court.
Last week, Paris Mayo, now 19, was convicted of the gruesome murder of her baby. She was born alone in the bedroom of her parents' home in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, in March 2019.
After breaking the bone, believed to have been caused by her foot, she then stuffed five cotton swabs into his mouth, two of which were found deep in his throat.
Mayo then placed the baby's dead body in a bag and left it on their doorstep before heading upstairs to bed.
Frighteningly, the killer had texted her older brother, George Mayo, saying: When you go out, can you put the black bag in the bin, it's just full of sick people from last night, please.
His remains were discovered the next morning by Mayo's mother, who called the police.
Her defense lawyer, Bernard Richmond KC, said Mayo had not been supported by the people around her.
Throughout her trial, Mayo had told the court she was unaware she was pregnant, but in the end she admitted it.
Asked why she started having sex at the age of 13, she said: I just thought it was a way to get people to like me because I was quite insecure about the way I looked and the way I was. because my family situation was quite bad. I was always belittled and told I was worthless. I just wanted to feel a little more valued, and the way I felt to achieve that was to have sex with people.
Regarding the moment of the baby's birth, she said: He didn't cry or make noise and his eyes weren't open. I started to get scared because he wasn't crying or making noise. It all happened so fast, I don't remember much about it. I just remember him hitting his head. The cord was around his throat.
Mr Richmond asked: The baby had skull fractures. Did you do it on purpose?
Mayo replied: No.
Asked about putting cotton in Stanley's mouth, she replied: It looked like there was stuff coming out of his mouth. When they questioned me, I said two, because that's all I remember doing.
Asked how she felt about the crime, Mayo said: It makes me feel really terrible because I didn't want to hurt him.
