The EU increases the pressure on Kurti and Vucic, Borrell: Reduction of
Borrel, Kurti and Vucic

The European Union warns of taking punitive measures against Kosovo and Serbia if the two countries do not undertake concrete results for the escalation of the situation. The harsh reaction was made by the Representative of Foreign Policy, Jozep Borrell, after the meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers.

"I underline that both sides must show readiness to implement the obligations from the dialogue. Member states are ready to take further measures if no progress is seen. We can consider political measures to limit political contacts, and financial measures as well. They must be measures, I told the member states, that the measures must be proportional and reversible. The member states are ready to be active and support us in our work"

Borrell, while evaluating the release of three policemen from Serbia, expressed the necessity of holding new elections in the four municipalities in the north of Kosovo and the implementation of the EU plan presented at the June 22 meeting for overcoming the crisis.

"We have agreed that we cannot have presidents in office protected forever by NATO forces, a president with three percent of the votes. It is not a sustainable choice. They must be replaced through elections, new elections. We need the participation of the Serbs, otherwise we will have the same situation".

The escalation of the situation between Kosovo and Serbia was also the request made by the US Secretary of State Antoni Blinken during the telephone conversation he had with the Serbian president, Aleksandër Vucic. As announced by the Serbian presidency, Blinken has supported the EU's plan to resolve the crisis, while Vucic himself has insisted on the arrest of Serbs in the north, the withdrawal of four Albanian mayors of the northern municipalities and the withdrawal of the special police.
