Great Britain indefinitely sequesters two 'charters' of

Private jets owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch have been detained indefinitely by the British government. The two planes belonging to oil billionaire Eugene Shvidler were under investigation at Farnborough and Biggin Hill airports for three weeks.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said "Friends of Putin" should not "enjoy luxury" while innocent people die in Ukraine.

Shvidler was sanctioned for ties with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

The government said Shvidler, a former boss and shareholder in Abramovich's steel giant Evraz PLC, was linked to a person who benefited, or supported the Russian government.

His net wealth has been estimated at 1.7 billion euros, the British government says, while the seized aircraft are believed to be worth up to 70ml euros.

A private helicopter of Russian firm HeliCo Group LLC has also been banned.

Western countries opposing the Russian president's invasion of Ukraine have imposed a series of sanctions designed to cripple Russia's economy and harm its wealthiest citizens.

Great Britain has made it a criminal offence for aircraft owned, operated or leased by Russians – including private jets – flying or landing on its territory.
