The head of diplomacy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, warned Serbia that its Euro-Atlantic aspirations do not coincide with the relations that Belgrade has with Russia.
"We welcome the strategic and courageous choices of some of them [Western Balkan states] that are fully compliant with the sanctions [against Russia]. We also emphasized to those who have not aligned yet, or have not aligned at all, and here I would especially emphasize Serbia, that maintaining close ties with Russia is not compatible with its EU accession process and is also evident for the national interest of Serbia ," said Borrell.
He made these statements after the meeting in Brussels of the bloc's ministers, where the situation in the Western Balkans region and the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia were discussed in the Council of Foreign Affairs.
In this meeting that was held on May 22, the ministers of foreign affairs from the six countries of the Western Balkans also participated.
The High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy and Security, Josep Borrell, also ordered the countries that have not adapted their foreign policy to that of the EU, to change their behavior.
Serbia is the only country in the region that has not imposed sanctions on Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine, not following the example of Brussels.
Meanwhile, speaking about the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Borrell called on the parties to implement all the obligations arising from this process and put an end to tensions and statements and provocative behavior. He said that the path to European integration goes through cooperation and building good neighborliness.
Even the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kosovo, Donika Gërvalla, said that during the meeting, several ministers emphasized the importance of normalizing relations between Pristina and Belgrade.
"Obviously, the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia is one of the topics that challenge our region. I have presented the position of the Republic of Kosovo that we see the agreement we concluded in Brussels and the implementation phase in Ohrid as a legally binding agreement and that we expect from Serbia - even though the signals are not good, because you also witness that the President [of Serbia, Aleksandar] Vucic, the Minister of Foreign Affairs [Serb, Ivica] Dacic, but also many others, continuously not only refuse implementation, but also deny the existence of such an agreement", Gërvalla said after the meeting.
Following the instructions given by the leaders of the EU and the Western Balkans from the summits of Berdo in 2021 and Tirana in 2022, the European Union has assisted partners to develop their capacities to face hybrid threats, especially cyber threats. and with campaigns of manipulation and interference by external factors.
The EU has also included the countries of the region in joint plans to prevent terrorist acts.
All of these will also be topics that EU ministers and their colleagues from the Western Balkan region will discuss in their joint meeting./REL
