Belgium, the 4-day week comes into force

The practice that allows employees in Belgium to work 4 days instead of 5 days a week has started to be implemented from Monday

The regulation, which was issued after the parties in the coalition government reached an agreement on the reform of working life in June, came into force today.

With this regulation, employees will be able to ask the employer to work 4 days. If the employee wants and agrees with the employer, the time of 38 hours per week can be completed in 4 days instead of 5 days.

Those who can take advantage of this option will be able to take 3 days off on weekends or use the extra 1 day leave during the week. This possibility can continue for 6 months as a result of an agreement with the employer. The agreement can be continued by mutual agreement at the end of 6 months.

Employers have the right to refuse such a request. But, the refusal is required to be based on a fair reasoning.

Some organizations, criticizing the practice, draw attention to the shortcomings of concentrating the workload in 4 days instead of 5 days for workplaces.

It is also noted that employees may spend a long time away from home along with the time spent on the way home after long working hours, which can have negative effects.
