Two Russian fighter jets repeatedly and dangerously intercepted an unarmed British Royal Air Force (RAF) spy plane over the Black Sea last month, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.
According to the official statement, a Russian Su-35 fighter jet approached the Rivet Joint surveillance aircraft at such a close distance that it activated emergency systems and deactivated the autopilot. Meanwhile, another Su-27 fighter jet made six passes in front of the British aircraft, coming within about six meters of the front.
British Defense Secretary John Healey called the incident "dangerous and unacceptable behavior," stressing that such actions increase the risk of accidents and escalation of tensions. He also praised the professionalism of the British crew during the flight.
The British Ministry of Defense announced that the Rivet Joint aircraft was on a routine international mission in the framework of the defense of NATO's eastern flank, while calling on the Russian embassy to condemn the incident.
