New details are emerging about the tragedy that occurred in the Maldives, where five Italian divers lost their lives during a dive in the Thinwana Kandu cave, also known as the "Shark Cave".

New evidence suggests the divers may have been pulled by strong underwater currents and then ran out of oxygen while trying to get back up. Meanwhile, a team of specialist divers has managed to extract all five bodies trapped in the cave.

The first to be found was the experienced diving instructor, Gianluca Benedetti, who was also the captain of the ship that had transported the group.

The bodies of Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, and divers Muriel Oddenino and Federico Gualtieri were later recovered. All five Italians were experienced divers, which has raised even more questions about the circumstances of the incident.

However, the most likely scenario remains that of being trapped in the cave after being pulled in by strong currents and unable to get out in time. The Finnish divers who carried out the operation to extract the bodies have also handed over to authorities the GoPro cameras belonging to the victims, which are suspected to contain key footage for the investigation.

The “Venturi effect” hypothesis

Alfonso Bolognini, president of the Italian Society of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine, told Italian media outlet Adnkronos that the divers may have encountered very strong currents created by the cave's only entrance.

According to him, the narrow shape of the cave may have created the so-called "Venturi effect", where increasing the speed of water flow in a narrowing causes a decrease in pressure and creates a type of strong suction.

Bolognini explained that this conclusion is based on information obtained by specialist divers from DAN Europe, who initially attempted to insert an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) into the cave entrance, but were unable to do so due to strong currents. “Based on the diagram of the cave, a very strong Venturi effect may have been created.

"After the inhalation, two scenarios could have happened: either they all pulled out at once, or one pulled out and the others tried to follow him to save him," he said. According to him, in trying to find a way out in such extreme conditions, the divers may have run out of oxygen, leading to the fatal tragedy.

Investigations continue to accurately clarify the circumstances of the incident and to analyze the data from the seized devices.
