Firearms are the leading cause of death for American children under 19. The data has been published by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, which said that in 2020, over 4,300 American minors were killed by gun control with and inadvertently.
While suicides and accidents contributed to these figures, data show that homicides account for the majority of gun-related deaths. More than 390 million weapons are owned by American civilians.
According to research, which was published this week in the New England Journal Medicine, the increase in gun-related deaths among Americans between the ages of one and 19 was part of an overall 33.4% increase in firearm homicides nationwide.
The killings, the study noted, disproportionately affect young Americans. During the same time period, the U.S. firearm suicide rate increased by 1.1 percent.
The overall rate of gun deaths for all reasons - suicide, murder, unintentional and undetermined murder among children and teenagers increased by 29.5 percent, more than double their total increase.
In past years, gun-related deaths were the second after car accidents as the leading cause of death among young Americans. Accident deaths, however, have declined over time and in 2020 about 3,900 Americans under 19 died in automobile accidents.
Incidents of drug overdoses and poisonings increased by 83.6 percent between 2019 and 2020 and are now the third leading cause of death in that group. A separate study published earlier in April found that 954 young people died of overdoses in 2020, compared to 492 in 2019.
Gun violence in the Us has increased since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020.
