West's weapons change Russian military strategy Ukraine

Russia's military operations in Ukraine will not extend "alone" to the east of the country, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said. In an interview with Russian state media, he hinted that Moscow's strategy had changed after the West supplied Ukraine with longer-range weapons of action.

Russia will now have to push Ukrainian forces further from the front line to ensure its security, he explained.

The United States had earlier accused Russia of preparing to annex large parts of Ukrainian territory.

Russia began the war in Ukraine in February, falsely claiming that Russian speakers in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region had suffered a genocide and should be liberated.

Five months later, Russia has invaded parts of the east and south of the country, but it failed in its original goal to capture Kiev and has since claimed that its main objective was the liberation of Donbass.

Since February, the West has supplied Ukraine with increasingly powerful weapons to use in its defense against Russian forces.

Lavrov says this has forced Russia to further expand its targets.

"We cannot allow the part of Ukraine controlled by [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky... own weapons that would pose a direct threat to our territory," Lavrov said in an interview with Russia Today.

"Geography is different now," he said, citing the southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia as Russia's latest targets. Moscow forces have already invaded parts of both regions.
