Many Americans continue to raise questions about whether President Joe Biden has been sufficiently harsh with his response to Russia's war in Ukraine. However, most support the steps the United States is taking on this issue, while a smaller number want American troops to be involved in the conflict.

According to a survey by the Associated Press news agency and the Center for Public Affairs Research "NORC", 54% of Americans think President Biden has not been harsh enough in his response to the Russian attack in Ukraine. Thirty-six percent (36%) think his approach has been right, while 8 percent say he's been too harsh.

But as the war continues, says Voice of America, Americans' desire to be involved in it has somewhat faded. Thirty-two percent of Americans say the United States should have a major role in the conflict. This marks a decrease from the 40% who thought this way last month, but remains slightly higher than the 26% who thought so in February. Meanwhile 49% of Americans say the U.S. should have a small role in the conflict.

The results put the White House in the face of difficult questions. As images of Russia's attacks on civilians and hospitals are being distributed worldwide, the trysnia has grown to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin and help millions of Ukrainians, who are in the country, or who are leaving because of the war. But President Biden must manage the possibility of escalating tensions with Russia prevent u.S. involvement in a much larger conflict, at a time when the Kremlin has threatened with access to nuclear weapons.

During a speech last week CIA Director William Burns said the threat posed by Moscow to the possible use of tactical nuclear weapons should not be taken lightly, given, as he put it, President Putin's possible desperation over the obstacles and problems they are facing militarily in Ukraine.

Mr Burns added that so far Washington has not seen much practical evidence that Russia is escalating efforts for a nuclear attack.

The White House has authorized more than $2 billion in arms aid to Ukraine and led Western sanctions that have severely damaged the Russian economy. President Biden has ruled out the possibility of sending U.S. troops there, a decision that is supported by most Americans.
