Argentina is battling a record outbreak of the Dengue virus infection, which has killed more than 40 people and infected more than 60,000 others, mostly in the northwest of the country.

This infection is spread by Aedes Aegupti mosquitoes and the biggest outbreak that hit Argentina was in 2020. The Ministry of Health has raised the alarm for an increase in cases as it has asked citizens to be careful.

Biologists have begun work in laboratories by irradiating thousands of such mosquitoes, changing their DNA in the hope that their offspring will not be infectious.

The mosquito spreads the most at the time of rising temperatures. Symptoms of the virus (dengue), which is contracted by mosquito bites, include fever, headache, vomiting and joint pain.

The Ministry of Health in Argentina has asked people to increase mosquito control measures, including mosquito nets on doors and windows, the use of insect repellants and the removal of any containers of water that could serve as a breeding ground.
