Melika and Aazam - fictitious names - are two Iranian girls from Mashhad and Tabriz, they are 20 and 21 years old and have just arrived in Italy after passing through Turkey.

They fled from the Islamic Republic, which wants to punish them for participating in the demonstrations of the last few months and for not wearing the Hijab. Melika and Aazam study philosophy and medicine. They do not belong to any political group, and own social networks such as Instagram and TikTok. They are the daughters of the 'Woman, Life, Freedom' movement that we have come to know through stories of boundless courage that, often, the unspeakable brutality of Ayatollah Khamenei's regime has condemned to violence and death.

"I take psychotropic drugs. The psychiatrist diagnosed me with traumatic stress disorder. I still wake up at night to check if there is anyone outside the door," says Aazam, who has been questioned by the police seven times in six months.

Melika is also in consultation with the psychiatrist, who tells the tortures of the prison guards.

"Since I was taken to prison, I have had panic attacks and nightmares. The truth here has a very high price. In November, guards dragged me out of my car because I was uncovered and honking my horn in solidarity with the protests. They beat me and forced me onto my motorcycle, sandwiched between two men. The one behind was rubbing against me. I knew exactly what would happen to me: I had heard it in a thousand stories," explains Melika.

When she arrived at the detention center, she was blindfolded and interrogated.

"We touched me all over, they hit me and asked me: did you set fire to the trash? Have you blocked that road? Confess and nothing will happen to your family. They had been following me for weeks, they knew I was part of the movement. I was released on bail," she said.

Melika says that she is among the "lucky ones" because she was not raped but "only" harassed. Rapes are so common that girls in prison ask their families to bring breakfast packs first after the pills.

"I spent my days in the cell thinking about when my turn would come," she says. While adding that she can no longer wear tight clothes for fear of male gazes. She can't even be in a room with men she doesn't know.

"They took him in a raid at the university. They wanted him to accuse a friend of killing a pasdaran: he never gave up. They raped him so badly that they had to take him to the hospital to stitch up his body. ". He was drugged and electroshocked. He is one of the hundreds sentenced to death by the regime. Now he is locked up in a psychiatric hospital and he no longer knows his name," Azam said.

Aazam says that when she and her parents went to see him, the doctors cried. He was the love of her life, she says, and she fears she will never see him again.

"He is 24 years old, but he looks 90 years old, he is already dead even if he is breathing," says Azam./ Source: Corriere.it
