Massive drone attack on Moscow, oil refinery engulfed in flames

A widespread Ukrainian drone attack hit Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, causing a fire at the Russian capital's oil refinery and damage to several other facilities.

According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, Russian air defense systems were facing a large-scale attack, but some drones managed to penetrate and hit the oil refinery in the southeastern Kapotnya area.

Footage from the scene showed flames and huge plumes of smoke rising above the industrial complex, while traffic on part of Moscow's ring road was halted for safety reasons.

This is the second time in a week that the Moscow refinery has been hit by Ukrainian drones. The previous attack, which occurred on Tuesday, is believed to have forced the suspension of operations at the plant, adding to Russia's difficulties in the fuel supply sector.

Sobyanin said that about 180 drones heading towards the capital were shot down by air defenses, while the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that a total of 555 Ukrainian drones were destroyed overnight in various regions of the country. These claims could not be independently verified.

In addition to the refinery, authorities reported damage to a shopping mall, a high-rise residential building, an industrial facility and several private homes in the region around Moscow.

Sheremetyevo Airport, the largest in the Russian capital, temporarily suspended flights and evacuated passengers, some of whom took shelter in parking areas.

Meanwhile, Russia continued its attacks on Ukraine. Authorities in Kiev reported another ballistic missile airstrike, while in the northeastern region of Sumy one person was killed after a drone strike.

There were also reports of casualties in areas near the front line. In Enerhodar, the city where most of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant workers live, Russian-backed authorities reported one death. In the Russian region of Belgorod, a man was killed after his vehicle was hit by a Ukrainian drone.

The mutual attacks come at a time when the war between Russia and Ukraine is entering a new phase of escalation, with increasingly deep strikes on energy infrastructure and strategic targets in both countries.
