Vox News Investigation: How Prestigious Romanée Conti, Petrus, Masseto and Sassicaia Wines Are Being Smuggled or Counterfeited, Sold in Clothing Stores

A few days ago, in a program broadcast on YouTube "Mirembrëma Yje" by Arbana Osmani, for New Year's Eve, a dinner was set up with artists, singers, wine tasters and showbiz personalities. Among them was a character called Luli (Lulëzim Vulashi) , known in recent years for a wine restaurant in Florence.

Luli has become famous through social networks, due to the frequency that Osmani makes of his restaurant, but in the Albanian market he is accused of being a wine speculator, the reason for which we will explain a little below.

During the evening, Luli said that there were Albanian businessmen who bought up to 24 bottles of "Romanée Conti" , a very special French wine that was once produced only for the Pope of the Vatican, and costs over 20 thousand euros.

"In Albania there are people who buy wines for 20 thousand euros, I have business clients who buy 12 to 24 expensive wines, Romanée Conti," said Luli during the end-of-year party.

This wine, one of the most expensive in the world, "Romanée Conti" became known to the Albanian public when several bottles of this wine were found smuggled into the winery of one of the businessmen wanted for the AKSHI thefts, Ergys Agasi, as well as another extremely expensive wine, "Petrus", which costs between 4,000 and 5,000 euros per bottle.

Vox News has managed to investigate through the 4 main wine importers in Albania, that "Romanee Conti" but also other expensive wines such as "Petrus", are impossible to obtain from European distributors for the Albanian market, due to extremely limited quantities.

It is not known how Luli i Firenze could sell a box of 24 bottles of Romanée Conti to a single businessman , calling into question not only the authenticity of the wine, but also the method of its entry into Albania. Sources close to Vox News indicate that Albanian Customs does not have a single bottle of Romanée Conti cleared for 2025.

"Not only Romanée Conti has never been cleared through customs, but also Petrus has minimal numbers cleared through customs, not exceeding 70-80 per year. The problem is that even when they catch smuggled wines, they are not seized with a report, but are put back on the market," said a reliable source from Albanian customs.

Limited quantity of premium wines

Vreshti "Romanée-Conti" është shumë i vogël, rreth 1.8 hektarë. Prodhimi mesatar i këtij vreshti për verë është rreth 4 500 – 6 000 shishe standarde (75 cl) në vit. Ndërkohë vera tjetër “Petrus” githashtu ka sasi pak më të lartë, por sërisht e limituar. Gjithësej për të gjithë botën prodhohen 35 000 shishe në vit dhe vreshti i tyre është diku tek 11 hektarë.

Mjaftojnë vetëm këto dy statistika për të kuptuar, sesa të limituara janë këto vera të kuqe për tregun botërorë, e jo të mendosh tregun shqiptar. Por, vijojmë!

Distributori shqiptar kërkon një sasi të madhe Petrus nga Negocianti “Barriere Freres”, por ky i fundit i shkruan se vetëm 6 shishe të vitit 2014 kam në dispozicion për Shqipërinë. Pra, por flasim për verën “Petrus” që prodhon 35 000 shishe në vit. Tani paramendoni që në Shqipëri mund të blesh kuti me 24 shishe “Romanée Conti” që prodhohen derine 6 000 shishe në vit.

Por kjo sasi e limituar nuk është vetëm për këto dy verërat e nga më të shtrenjta. E njëjta situatë paraqitet edhe për verat “Masseto”, “Ornellaia” dhe “Sassicaia”, ku distributorët ndërkombëtar sjellin me sasi me pikatore për tregun shqiptarë, pasi kanë prioritet tregun francez, gjerman, Italian, anglez e amerikan etj.

Në këtë porosi të kryer sërish nga një prej distributorëve më të mëdhenj shqiptar, shihet se numri i limituar i porosisë.

Investigimi i Vox News është fokusuar edhe tek falsifikimi i verërave “Romanée Conti”, “Petrus”, “Masseto” dhe shumë brandeve të njohura botërore. Numërohen me gishtat e dorës ata që njohin verat në Shqipëri, shumica e konsumatorëve janë të prirur kryesisht të konsumojnë verërat që kanë një emër të njohur në Europë. Për shkak të sasisë së limituar siç dokumentuam më sipër nga njëra anë dhe rritjes së kërkesës nga ana tjetër, në tregun shqiptar.

Redaksia jonë ka komunikuar me një dyqan rrobash të quajtur “Irena’s Wardrobe”, ku përveç veshjeve tregonte dhe verën prestigjoze “Petrus”, “Masseto” dhe “Ornellaia”. Gazetari ynë i kërkon sasi “Petrus” dhe dyqani i rrobave tregon disponibilitet për sasinë duke i thënë se kushton 4 400 euro shishja.

Meanwhile, in a second communication, the clothing store "Irena's Wardrobe" shows how many different quantities of prestigious wines such as "Masseto" or "Ornellaia" it has, also showing the corresponding price.

In fact, as we indicated above, securing these wines in quantity is impossible, but sources for Vox News indicate that for some time now, labels of prestigious wines have been massively counterfeited in Albania.

"They find bottle shapes very similar to Petrus, Masseto or Ornellaia and forge the labels. Then they sell them on the black market," one of the largest distributors of alcoholic beverages in Albania told Vox News.

 "The same thing is happening with Champagnes, which are also easily counterfeited, as it is impossible to obtain them on the formal market, from foreign distributors. I think they are more counterfeit than smuggled, because they are selling them below the price that foreign distributors are giving us," the Albanian distributor added.

In the end, it is up to Albanian customs to verify everything from clothing stores to restaurants that offer prestigious French wines.
