On February 10, 1962, the Cold War world witnessed one of the most dramatic moments of the East-West confrontation.

At the Glienicke Bridge, which connected West Berlin to East Germany, the Soviet Union and the United States carried out a high-profile prisoner exchange.

At the center of this event was American pilot Francis Gary Powers, whose U-2 spy plane had been shot down over Soviet territory in 1960, causing an international crisis.

He was exchanged for Rudolf Abel, a high-ranking Soviet spy (known as Vilyam Genrikhovich Fisher), who had been held prisoner by the United States since 1957.

This event marked the first time the two superpowers used the bridge for such an exchange, giving it the everlasting nickname "Bridge of Spies," a term that later inspired books and Steven Spielberg's famous film.

Powers returned to the US the next day, on February 11, 1962, closing a tense chapter in the history of espionage.
