It has often been rumored and accused that King Ahmet Zogu took Albania's gold with him when he left the country after the occupation by Fascist Italy in 1939.

Full view of the Archives Directorate which has published the documents:

Today, on September 16, 1943, the gold of the Bank of Albania was robbed.

The operation was led by SS Major Herbert Kappler. The stolen amount of gold is estimated to reach the amount of 23,408 kilograms. The gold was moved from Rome to the Reich Bank and then hidden in the Merkens potash mine of Thuringia. Subsequently, the gold was transferred by the Allies in part to England and the Federal Bank of New York.

Attached are notes on the reserve gold of the Albanian currency. With the note of November 3, 1943 addressed to the German Consulate General, the Albanian government requested that the gold be deposited in Switzerland at the Bank of issue, arguing that as a neutral country, Switzerland would trust the holder of the Albanian banknote to provide the corresponding counter value.

On November 10, 1943, the German Consulate General showed its willingness to host an Albanian commission in "Rajh Bank". In March 1944, the chosen commission, headed by Vehbi Frashëri and with members of the former heads of the National Bank of Albania, Loro Musani and Sandro Bressan, left for Berlin. In the inability to take it to Switzerland, the gold could be deposited for safekeeping in "Rajh Bank" only in the name of the Albanian state or in the name of the state and the National Bank.

On April 6, 1944, the gold was deposited for safekeeping at the "Rajh Bank" in Berlin only in the name of the National Bank. The protocol was concluded between the Albanian government and the German government signed a protocol, which defined the responsibilities of the signatory parties.
