The Legend of Hercules: Who was the hero of Greek and Roman mythology?
Hercules

Hercules (known in Greek as Herakles) is one of the most popular heroes in Greek and Roman mythology. His life was not easy, he endured many trials and performed very daunting tasks, but the reward for his suffering was a promise that he would live forever among the gods on Mount Olympus.

Early life

Hercules had a complicated family tree. According to legend, his father was Zeus, ruler of all the gods on Mount Olympus and all people on earth, and his mother was Alcmene, the granddaughter of the hero Perseus. (Perseus, said to be one of the sons of Zeus).

Hera's Revenge

Hercules had enemies even before he was born. When Zeus's wife, Hera, found out that her husband's lover was pregnant, she went mad. At first she used her supernatural powers to prevent Hercules from becoming the ruler of Mycenae (even though Zeus had declared that his son would inherit the Mycenaean kingdom).

After Hercules was born, Hera sent two snakes to kill him. As a baby Hercules was extremely strong and fearless, however, and he smothered the snakes before they could suffocate him. But Hera didn't use all her dirty tricks.

When Hercules grew up, she cast a spell on him driving him mad, and so he killed his wife and children. Guilty and heartbroken, Hercules met Apollo, the God of truth and healing, and begged him to be punished for what he had done.

Some of the heroic labors of Hercules

Apollo realized that Hercules' crime was not his fault, since Hera's vengeful actions were no longer a secret. And for this he ordered Hercules to perform 12 heroic labors for the Mycenaean king Eurystheus.

Through these works he would be forgiven and attain immortality.

1 – Lion of Nemea

At first Apollo sent Hercules to the hills of Nemea to kill a lion that was terrorizing the people of the region. Hercules drowned him in the cave.

2 – The Serpent of Lerna

Hercules then traveled to the city of Lerna to kill the 9-headed Hydra, a poisonous snake that lived underwater.

3 – Boar on Mount Erymanthus

Hercules used a giant net to catch the man-eating wild boar on Mount Erymanthus.

4 – The Golden Deer

Hercules then set out on a mission to capture the sacred animal of the goddess Diana, a golden doe.

5 – Garbage of Augea

The fifth task of Hercules was to clear all the rubbish from the great stables of King Augeas.

6 – Stymphalian birds

The next mission was to travel to the Stimfalian city and drive away the large flock of carnivorous birds.

7 – The Bull of Crete

Hercules went to Crete to capture an angry bull that had attacked the king's wife on that island.

8 – Horses of Diomedes

Hercules' next task was to capture the 4 horses of the Thracian king Diomedes.

9 – Belt of Hippolyta

Task 9 was complicated: stealing an armored belt that belonged to the Amazon queen Hippolyte.

10 – Cattle of Gerion

Hercules was sent to Africa to steal the cattle of the 6-foot monster Geruon. Hera did everything to prevent it but failed.

11 – Apples of the Hesperides

In Mission 11, Hercules was sent to steal the wedding gift Zeus had given Hera: a bunch of golden apples.

For his final challenge, Hercules traveled to Hades to kidnap Cerberus, a three-headed dog.

Immortality

After successfully completing all the missions despite attempts to stop him, Hercules managed to gain immortality.

He also managed to save the princess of Troy, fight for control of Mount Olympus. According to legends, he spent the rest of his life with the Gods.
