Fear sells. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, "spooky tourism" has turned dark and mysterious places into tourist attractions with millions of visitors each year.
Unlike the temporary haunted houses that open during Halloween, these places are "real," filled with macabre stories, dark secrets, and blood-curdling sights.
Here are 7 of the scariest destinations in the world:
Bone Church – Sedlec, Czech Republic

This small Catholic church houses the remains of about 40,000 people, artistically arranged on the walls, ceilings, and furniture. The most famous masterpiece is the lamp made of human bones, as well as the coat of arms of the aristocratic Schwarzenberg family. All this was done not for macabre purposes, but for practical reasons, to save burial space. After returning from Jerusalem in 1278, the abbot of Sedlec brought some from Golgotha, the site of Christ's crucifixion, and thousands of Christians asked to be buried there. To make room for the younger ones, the previous remains were exhumed and placed inside the chapel.
Bell Witch Cave – Tennessee, USA

Legend has it that in the 19th century, the Bell family was cursed by the spirit of a witch, Kate Batts, who had been their neighbor. According to the stories, she poisoned John Bell and tortured his family, especially his daughter Betsy. Even President Andrew Jackson is said to have visited the house and fled in terror, saying, “I would rather face the entire British army than spend another night with the Bell Witch.” Today, visitors can see John Bell’s house and the cave where her spirit is believed to still haunt.
Island of the Dolls – Teshuilo, Mexico

On this small island, Don Julian Santana lived alone for 50 years, collecting hundreds of damaged dolls that he hung from trees as “gifts” to the spirit of a girl who drowned in the canal. The sight is terrifying, the broken dolls hanging from the branches like shadows of a lost childhood. Although it seems macabre, Don Julian’s goal was clear: to give toys to the spirit of the girl who never got to grow up.
Battleship Island – Nagasaki, Japan

Known as Hashima or Gunkanjima, this small island was once an industrial hub with thousands of coal miners. Since its closure in 1974, the island has been abandoned and looks like a ghost town on the sea. In 2015, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and is also mentioned as the location where the James Bond film “Skyfall” was filmed. Visitors can now enter, but the isolated atmosphere and dilapidated buildings make the experience completely shocking.
Catacombs of Paris – France

Under the streets of Paris lie an estimated 6 million human skeletons, housed in dark, dank labyrinths. These catacombs were created in the 18th century to solve the problem of overcrowded cemeteries. Today, they are one of the city's scariest attractions, but also its most dangerous; in 2017, two teenagers were lost for three days in the endless tunnel. Due to the large influx of tourists, the catacombs will close for reconstruction on November 3, 2025, and are expected to reopen in 2026.
Poveglia Island – Venice, Italy

A small island between Venice and Lido, Poveglia has a dark history. In the 18th century, it served as a quarantine area for plague victims, and later, in the 1920s, it was converted into a psychiatric asylum. According to legend, a sadistic doctor who tortured his patients ended up throwing himself from the bell tower. Today, the rusting buildings still stand, and although the island is off limits to visitors, some Venetian boatmen still offer secret trips to the island for the brave.
Darvaza Crater – “Gate to Hell”, Turkmenistan

In the middle of the Karakum Desert lies a fiery crater that has been burning continuously for more than 50 years. Known as the “Gate to Hell,” it was created in 1971 when Soviet geologists accidentally ignited a gas field to prevent a methane leak. The flames continue to burn today, making the place a terrifying natural wonder. However, due to strict visa regulations, Turkmenistan remains one of the most difficult countries to visit.
