A strong public reaction from former Finance Minister Arben Malaj has brought back into focus the pricing practices of the airline Wizz Air in the Albanian market, describing them as abusive and penalizing for consumers.
In a post on social media, Malaj lists some of the fees that, according to him, are being used as punitive mechanisms against travelers and are significantly increasing the real cost of travel.
According to his response, the company applies a fee of 48 euros for passengers who do not check in online, an amount that constitutes about 40 percent of the total price of a round-trip ticket.

He emphasizes that online services, in cases where the company has physical counters at the airport, should be an alternative option and not a means of financial penalty for travelers.
Another criticized element is the fee of 78 euros for an additional suitcase weighing up to 20 kilograms, which according to Malaj is disproportionate and in many cases higher than the ticket price itself.
According to the former minister, these additional costs increase the real price of the ticket by 35 to 60 percent, deceiving the consumer at the time of purchase and creating a false perception of the final price of the trip.
He also raises serious concerns about the lack of functioning of the assistance service, stating that out of three contact numbers, two did not answer, while assistance in the Albanian language was practically inaccessible, as the telephone system constantly returned the user from one option to another without offering a solution.
Malaj emphasizes that these practices cannot be considered simply aggressive commercial policies, but constitute a violation of consumer rights and abuse of a dominant position in a market with limited competition, such as air transport in Albania.
At the end of his response, he raises direct questions about the lack of institutional response, demanding to know who really protects Albanian travelers and where the Competition Authority, Consumer Protection structures, and air transport regulatory institutions are.
