Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha was punched today by 31-year-old Gerti Shehu, before the start of the protest that was announced to be held simultaneously with the EU-Western Balkans summit.
Shehu avoided the bodyguards and punched Berisha straight in the face, but then the former prime minister's bodyguards retaliated by beating him. Photos with Berisha's bloodied face made the rounds of the network and also occupied the main pages of foreign media.
The 31-year-old, according to a document issued by the doctor, suffers from mental health problems. This is confirmed by his family members, but also by the doctor who treated Sadik Lala.
So far, it has not proven that we are dealing with an attack ordered by politics, despite Berisha's claims.
But an almost identical case also happened with the former Prime Minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi.
On December 13, 2009, while holding a rally in Milan's Piazza Duomo square, Berlusconi was hit in the face by an iron statue of the Milan Cathedral. The event happened at the moment when Berlusconi was getting into the car and was greeting his supporters, as the statue was thrown from a distance by 42-year-old Massimo Tartaglia at the time.
Berlusconi appeared with blood on his face as his supporters attacked the aggressor. Massimo Tartaglia suffered from mental health problems for 10 years and was not known as an activist. A small souvenir, a cross, and a can of pepper spray were also found in his pocket.
