The government gets into the 36 million euro business of death

The government has approved this Wednesday a decision, according to which all funeral agencies that want to offer this service must apply to the municipalities where they operate for a license.

The unusual decision sets some conditions for funeral agencies, where, among other things, the decision brings for the first time the term "Funeral House", which in definition is an environment invisible from the outside, which serves as a reception house for the performance of farewell rituals and rites others in honor of dead persons.

Currently, funeral agencies in Albania, apart from the state funeral service, operate as businesses registered at the National Business Center. The number of those registered reaches several hundreds.

Their activity has increased due to the aging of the population. During the last year, INSTAT reported about 24 thousand deaths during the last year. The cost of funeral services varies by agency, but also by district.

The tendency is that in rural areas and small towns, the prices applied by funeral agencies are lower, on average at 1,000 euros, while in big cities the prices are higher and, depending on the required services, can even exceed 2,000 euros.

Taking as an average a figure of 1500 euros and multiplying this figure by the 24 thousand deaths that occurred last year, it turns out that the business of funeral agencies has collected 36 million euros in 12 months.

Perhaps this is the reason for government intervention in the funeral agency business, demanding its share of the death business.
