NASA has released the first four images taken by Artemis II astronauts from the Orion capsule as their mission heads toward the Moon.

They have provided unique views of Earth from space.

The images were captured by mission commander Reed Wiseman, capturing four different perspectives of our planet.

The first image was described by NASA's Mission Control Center in Houston as "a reminder that no matter how far we go, we remain a world watching us." The second image shows Earth as a "blue dot" as seen by the crew during the journey.

In the third image, taken by the Artemis II crew, we see the division between night and day, known as the terminator, cutting across the Earth. Whether we are awake or fast asleep, we are all here on this planet together. In the fourth image, also taken from the Orion capsule, we can see ourselves represented by the electric lights of human activity.

The photos show what mission member Christina Koch, who spoke to media representatives on the second day of the flight, said, emphasizing the unique experience of viewing the planet from space.

"Just seeing incredible images of Earth and seeing the entire planet through a window, knowing that we're going to have a similar view of the Moon, it makes me even more excited," she said, adding that nothing can prepare you for the breathtaking experience of seeing the Earth illuminated by the sun and moonlight at night, combined with the colors of the sunset.

Wiseman also described a special moment when the Control Center in Houston changed Orion's orientation as the sun set behind Earth.

"We could see the entire planet from pole to pole. We could see Africa and Europe, and if we looked closely, we could even see the Northern Lights. It was the most spectacular moment and it fascinated us all ," he said.

The astronauts spent a lot of time taking pictures, even during a period when the first shared meal of the space mission was scheduled, which was postponed so that Earth observations could continue.

"We have an incredible view of the dark side of the Earth right now, illuminated by the Moon. It's something unique. None of us can go eat because we're all stuck at the window taking pictures," said astronaut and Canadian Space Agency mission specialist Jeremy Hansen.
