In Albania, as in many other countries, criminal gangs have become an important source of information for journalists.
Their illegal activities, often violent and involved in serious crimes, attract the attention of the media and affect the daily life of citizens.
However, reporting on these groups brings special challenges and responsibilities that require special care from journalists.
In Albania, in the last case, we see that journalists rush to make the news without confirming it, but simply trusting the "source" who is using it.
Such was the news about Marklen Haka's arrest in (Dubai on July 31, 2024), while the 33-year-old was in Fushë-Kruje and watched the news of his arrest.
But on September 6, it is not known what happened that led to the arrest of Haka by arresting him, in his testimony he said that he had never left Albania.
Journalist Dritan Laçi in a television studio on the news about Marklen Haka's arrest in Dubai, said that journalists were either used by the police or used by crime.
According to journalist Laçi, the sources of information are either from the State Police to a particular journalist, or the gangs are interested in providing such news.
Do Criminal Gangs Influence News Reporting:
Criminal gangs are often associated with serious crimes such as drug trafficking, prostitution, armed robbery, and violence.
These activities create extraordinary events that are attractive to the media and the public.
Journalists often attend these events to report on crimes, provide information on investigations, and help inform the public about the threats posed by criminal gangs.
Risk and Safety of Chronicle Journalists:
Journalists reporting on criminal gangs are often in great danger.
The activities of these groups may include threats and acts of violence against those who disturb them, including journalists.
The risk to the safety of journalists is a significant concern and often requires special safeguards and strategies to keep those on the ground safe.
Responsibility and Ethics of the Chronicle Journalist:
An important ethical issue is how journalists report on criminal gangs.
For example, there is a risk that the media will highlight unnecessary details that may incite fear and panic in the public, or glorify gangs and their actions.
Journalists must balance between the need to inform and the responsibility not to contribute to the spread of criminal propaganda.
How the media fall into the trap of crime
In some cases, the media may fall into the trap of sensationalism, exaggerating or over-describing the nature of crimes to attract the attention of readers.
This can have serious consequences for the victims of these crimes, as well as for the general safety of the community.
Sensationalism can also help build a fearsome image for gangs, making them more powerful in public perception.
The role of Investigative Journalism in the media and community
Investigative journalism plays an important role in investigating the activities of criminal gangs. By uncovering and illuminating the connections and activities of these groups, journalists can help stop crimes and contribute to improving public safety.
However, this type of reporting requires great care and considerable resources to ensure that the information is accurate and protected from any potential penalties.
In conclusion, the relationship between criminal gangs and journalism is complex and often dangerous.
Journalists reporting on these groups must have a special sensitivity to the ethics and risks of their work, while ensuring that the information provided is accurate and useful to the public, without contributing to increasing fear and insecurity in society.
