The international world order is under threat in a way we have not seen since the Cold War. The warning was made by the heads of the US and British intelligence services, the CIA and MI6 in a rare joint statement.
The heads of two of the world's biggest spy agencies have said the two countries they represent stand together to contrast Russia's tough foreign policy and Putin's war in Ukraine.
In a joint article published in the "Financial Times", directors William Burns (CIA) and Sir Richard Moore (MI6) state that they saw the war in Ukraine approaching and were able to warn the international community, in part by releasing secrets to help Kiev.
They have also stated that a great deal of work is being done to "hinder the irresponsible campaign of sabotage" undertaken by Russia in Europe, to de-escalate the Israel-Hamas conflict and to destroy the resurgence of the Islamic State.
"There is no doubt that the international world order, that balanced system that led to relative peace and stability that brought rising living standards, opportunity and prosperity, is under a threat not seen since the Cold War." the two directors said unanimously in the joint article.
According to them, one of the unprecedented threats facing both countries is the war in Ukraine, which is in its third year.
"The continuation of the course started is more vital than ever", said Moore and Burns, adding that the support for Ukraine will continue and that President Putin will not achieve his goal.
"In addition to Ukraine, we continue to work together to curb the irresponsible campaign of sabotage undertaken by Russian intelligence in Europe and its cynical use of technology to spread lies and misinformation, to erect barriers between us," they said. followed by the heads of the spy agencies.
They further warned that both intelligence services also see the rise of China as the greatest geopolitical challenge of the century and added that they have reorganized to pay attention to this problem.
