The coast is one of the most favorite places in this period in our country. It seems as if people can't wait to dive into the salt water and get the sun's rays that give color to our bodies.

In recent years, more and more people are talking about the care we should show to the skin. As good as the sun is, it also damages, ages the skin and leaves eternal scars.

Therefore, at this time, dermatologists come to our aid, giving us advice on how to benefit from the sun's rays and how to protect ourselves from them.

Today we have invited Dr. Rudina Thanasi.

She explains what happens to our body when we are not protected from harmful rays and how we can protect ourselves to get a beautiful and healthy complexion.

But not only the sun damages the skin, but also stress, the way we eat, and even the bad thoughts we "hold" in our heads.

Below is a conversation with Dr. Rudina Thanasin.

-Doctor Rudina, we are now entering the season which exposes us to the strong radiation of the sun. How harmful are these rays?

Fortunately, we live in a Mediterranean and coastal country. We are exposed to the sun all year round. The sun is vital for our organism, only since the exposure and the duration of exposure to the sun intensify during the summer, then we have to be more careful.

We must be especially careful in that period of the day when the shadow of our body is shorter than the real length of the body. These are the hours in which we burn more easily, but also the hours in which UVA is the length of the sun's rays which create damage at the DNA level. The first risk is burning, then dehydration, intensification of wrinkles, accelerated aging, melasma (brown spots), marks on the skin after an injury or after acne, hypertrophic scars and keloid, toxicity and the most serious is skin cancer. There are also many other diseases that worsen during this period such as hypertension, lupus, rosacea and others like these.

– How should we protect ourselves from the rays of the sun so desired at this time?

During the summer period, continuous hydration is a priority, but also the increase in consumption of electrolytes, because together with the loss of water through increased sweating, we also lose electrolytes.

Consumption of red, orange and green fruits. And without question the use of photoprotector or sunscreen placed in the shade. It is especially important to apply the cream 30 minutes before exposure and reapply every 2 hours.

Likewise, if we sweat or enter the sea, we must restore it. It is very important to put the sunscreen in the shade from 30 to 10 minutes before exposure and apply it with a homogeneous tampon, not like any usual cream, otherwise the protective filter is destroyed.

The time of exposure to the sun after 11:00 to 17:00 should be reduced, especially for children up to 9 years old and for the elderly.

Recommend using thermal waters or flower waters continuously throughout the summer. Their placement is very easy with a spray, 25 cm away from the skin as the perfume is placed.

For those people who have acne, rosacea, lupus, phototoxicity, sun allergies or sunspots, a sunscreen with only chemical filters is not enough. For these, a protective cream with physical protection is recommended, similar to a powder cream or thick make-up, placed with a homogeneous buffering, before exposure to the sun, just like the usual protective cream.

It seems paradoxical, but during the summer, as much physical coverage as possible is recommended. Preferably long sleeves and synthetic materials such as swimwear. If you look at the clothes of expensive firms for several years in the summer collections, they offer blouses, shirts, dresses, and long synthetic pants. The use of light colored clothes is also important.

-Does sunscreen protect us and how much?

There are many myths and confusion surrounding the protective ability of sunscreen. Yes, sunscreen protects and is essential all summer and all year round. But the sun cream mainly protects measurably against UVB rays which mainly cause skin burning and dehydration but not against UVA rays which are more aggressive and cause accelerated aging, wrinkles and cancer.

There are already many protective creams that have UVA filters but still do not provide enough protection. The main function of a sunscreen is to prolong the duration of the onset of reddening and burning of the skin from exposure to the sun.

This depends on the protective factor. For example, the protection cream with factor 15 postpones the appearance of redness on the skin by 15 minutes. Cream with factor 50 postpones redness by 50 minutes, etc.

There is no sunscreen, shade, clothing, or umbrella to protect you after 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

-What is the most suitable time to get sunlight?

For children newly born up to 3 years old, they can be exposed until 9:00 in the morning and after 18:00 in the afternoon. It is recommended to respect these schedules for children up to 9 years old and the elderly.

For young people and adults exposure is recommended until 10-11 and after 16:00-17:00 However, if you are on the coast and do not have your watch with you, it is very simple. Observe the shadow. If the shadow of objects or your body is shorter than the observed object, then it is time to go home.

- Is only the sun the cause of skin aging? Are there other factors that favor wrinkles?

There are many other factors that affect skin aging such as using the wrong cosmetics. Not properly hydrated. Exposure to toxic chemical substances. The main factor is stress and especially the insufficient ability of the body and psyche to cope with the small stress of daily adoption. Overweight is another factor. Improper food rich in nitrates, sugar and dough.

Apart from stress, sleep also affects it, right?

In the last 7 years, all studies in the field of medicine consider stress and inflammation as the main cause of the decline of immunity and the appearance of any disease. Stress is one of the main factors in the appearance of facial wrinkles, dehydration and accelerated aging.

While sleep is that very important moment in our lives that gives us the chance to renew. Without a restful sleep, there is no peace, no health. Recommended for skin health is to be in deep sleep at 11:00 p.m., when natural collagen regeneration begins. But more than the quantity and schedule of sleep, the quality of sleep is important.

A good sleep is one in which you go to bed physically tired and wake up in the morning physically, mentally and emotionally rested.

I want to add the results of a study a few months ago, one of the authors of which is the winner of the Nobel Prize in 2016, which pointed out that judging others, making malicious rumors and thinking negatively was one of the reasons for aging faster and uglier. As it seems, the way we perceive the world and what level of consciousness we are affects beauty, youth and the presence or not of wrinkles, not only physical factors.

-On the other hand, the market is full of detergents, soaps, which have a lot of chemicals and often people find it difficult to choose. How should they act in order not to make a mistake in the election?

Simple. Every 45 days you should consult a dermatologist to choose the right products for your skin care. It is the most accurate and cheapest way in the long run. All cosmetic products can be very good, but not every product is right for you and not every time.

- How do sea water and pool water affect the skin?

Water is very necessary for the skin. If you can, choose the sea. The first sea. Second the river, then the lake and finally the pool.

- How should we take care of children at this time?

The protection of children is very important, because the sun's rays which bring changes in DNA affect them more strongly because the body is growing and developing continuously and the changes can be permanent. How exposed the child is in the first 3 years then the first 5 to 9 years of life is decisive for life. If it has been protected from prolonged and harmful exposure during the first 3 to 9 years of life then there will be no real problems from exposure to the sun throughout life.

For children newly born and up to 3 years old, they can be exposed until 9 in the morning and after 18:00-19:00 in the afternoon. It is recommended to respect these schedules even for children up to 9 years old.

Consume plenty of fluids and consume red, orange and green seasonal fluids at least 2 months before the beach and during the beach. Dress in the lightest possible white clothes, cover your arms and legs.

Sunscreen specific for children is applied every 2 hours as for adults. The ears and the area around the eyes should also not be neglected.

-What are the most frequent cases that come for treatment in your clinic, in terms of skin?

The most frequent cases in my clinic during the summer are hydrations with hyaluronic acid to better cope with sun exposure, mesolife to optimize the skin. Common during the beach period are dermatitis or phytophotodermatoses, major acne, rashes. Preparation of the skin to avoid the appearance of brown spots (melasma).

Frequent are slimming treatments, cellulite treatment, and the treatment of stretch marks (stretch marks).

And without a doubt, the most requested are Botox injections, hyaluronic acid filler, mesotherapy and mesolife for brightening and brightening the skin or treating acne because everyone wants to look beautiful during the holidays.

-What about men, do they care?

There is a growing interest of men towards aesthetic procedures and skin care in general. They are very strict in following the treatment. Appearance is not only important for women. Now turning to a dermatologist to take care of the appearance is not a taboo even for men. It is a significant part of the social and cultural development of a society. Let's not forget that one of the measures of the social and cultural development of a country is the quantity and quality of cosmetic products used per capita.
