A serious incident has occurred in the state of Oregon, in the US, where a 16-year-old killed three children and a teacher at an elementary school. After the attack, a citizen followed the teenager inside the school and shot him dead.

The incident occurred Thursday afternoon at Silver Rail Elementary School in the city of Bend. According to local police Chief Mike Krantz, the teenager forced his way into the school after firing a gun at the locks on the closed doors.

Three children, ages 5, 8, and 11, as well as a teacher, were killed in the attack. Meanwhile, a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to hospital in critical condition.

According to police, a citizen who was nearby saw the attack and decided to follow the perpetrator inside the school. There, he confronted the 16-year-old and shot him to death. Three minutes after the first report, police officers arrived at the scene. They confirmed that the attacker was dead and then searched the school premises.

Police identified the shooter as a 16-year-old from the area, but did not release his name or the identities of the victims. It is also unclear if the teenager had any connection to the school. Bend police spokeswoman Sheila Miller said the first report of the shooting was received at 12:59 p.m. local time, or 7:59 p.m. GMT.

The first call came from a person reporting that an unknown person was shooting at his car with a long gun. Photos released from the scene show a red truck with bullet holes.

Minutes later, the county's emergency services received a 911 call reporting that a gunman had entered the school. According to police, he had shot through the door locks to gain entry into the building.

Schools in the city of Bend were closed Friday after the incident. Authorities said the community needed time to grieve and recover from the tragedy.

"We are shocked and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy," said Steven Cook, the local school district's chief administrative officer.

He added that there are no words that can fully express the pain the community is experiencing. About 450 children attend Silver Rail Elementary School and more than 40 adults work there, according to police.

Meanwhile, data from the K-12 School Shooting Database shows that 235 shooting incidents were recorded in American schools last year, while at least 140 such incidents had been reported by the time the news was published this year.
