Turkish police intervened on Wednesday morning, October 14, at the headquarters of Halk TV in Istanbul, taking control of the opposition media outlet's premises and interrupting the live broadcast of the program.

The news was announced by the television station itself through a statement published on platform X, announcing that police forces were inside the building and that a commissioner had been appointed to run the station.

"Police are inside the Halk TV building. A commissioner has been appointed to take over the station. Live broadcasts have been suspended," the television station said in a statement.

According to Turkish media reports, police forces entered the television premises at around 05:30 in the morning and conducted searches. Meanwhile, the road in front of the building was blocked, while television employees were prevented from entering the working premises.

Footage posted on social media shows some of Halk TV's employees gathered outside the building, waiting for the opportunity to enter.

A video has also been shared on social media documenting the moment when the television program was suddenly interrupted during a live broadcast.

Halk TV's general news director, Suat Toktaş, reportedly tried to ensure the continuation of the broadcast by contacting the appointed head of administration, but his efforts were unsuccessful.

The intervention has caused reactions in Turkey, where opposition representatives have condemned the action, calling it a blow to press freedom.

Halk TV is considered one of the television media outlets close to the Turkish opposition and broadcasts information programs and political debates.

As of the publication of this news, full details on the official reasons for the police intervention and the appointment of the commissioner have not been released.
