Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by daily trading volume, has faced one of the largest cyberattacks in the history of the cryptocurrency market, with more than $6 billion in digital assets allegedly stolen.
News of the robbery caused prices of most major cryptocurrencies to plummet on Friday, shaking the international digital asset market.
Following the attack, Binance stated that it would fully cover the losses, noting that it had used its own funds to purchase tokens and recover around 90% of the stolen amount.
For security reasons, the company temporarily suspended user withdrawals, but announced that the service would be gradually restored. The first phase of the resumption of withdrawals began on Sunday.
According to data released by the platform, from 06:00 GMT to 15:30 GMT, Binance processed $4.65 billion in withdrawals and $1.01 billion in deposits. The net outflow of $3.64 billion represented about 2.1% of the company’s total assets under management.
Meanwhile, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has officially accused North Korea of orchestrating the cyberattack. In a statement released on Saturday, the FBI blamed the hacker group TraderTraitor, which is suspected of having links to Pyongyang.
The same group has also been accused of stealing $1.5 billion from cryptocurrency platform Bybit in February 2025.
In its statement, the FBI said North Korea was responsible for the theft of more than $6 billion in virtual assets from Binance on or around October 29, 2026.
According to US authorities, the hackers have begun converting the stolen assets into the Ethereum cryptocurrency, and are expected to move them further through decentralized finance platforms and instant exchange services, in an attempt to hide their origin.
The FBI has called on companies and private sector entities to block any transactions associated with digital addresses used by the TraderTraitor group to transfer and launder stolen funds.
Investigations into the attack are ongoing, while the event has reignited concerns about the security of major cryptocurrency trading platforms and the risk that cyberattacks pose to the global digital asset market.
