A week after the opposition's victory in the parliamentary elections in Serbia, Marko Kričak , head of the Serbian Criminal Police, was arrested by order of the Prosecutor's Office.
He and his deputy, Bosko Sekulovic , are accused of abuse of office, Serbian media report, citing the state news agency Tanjug .
In last Sunday's elections, the student-backed opposition list won the majority of seats in parliament, leaving the ruling coalition led for years by Aleksandar Vučić in opposition.
Although the change of government has not yet been implemented, the arrest of one of the senior police officials is seen as an important development, as Kričak was considered one of Vučić's closest people in the police ranks.
According to the Prosecution, Kriçak is suspected of obstructing and manipulating the investigation into a mafia-related murder. He is accused of interfering with the evidence in the case in order to drop charges of aiding and abetting the murder.
From car salesman to head of the Criminal Police
Kričak's career in state structures began after he worked as a car salesman. He was later recruited into the Serbian Intelligence Agency (BIA), where he reportedly became close to Vučić's Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
In July 2023, he took charge of the Unit for the Protection of Persons and Objects (JZO), while at the end of 2025 he was appointed head of the Serbian Criminal Police.
In addition to the alleged manipulation of investigations, the Prosecution also accuses him of mistreatment and intimidation of peaceful protesters.
One of the episodes mentioned relates to August 2025, when JZO officers dragged a group of students and took them to the basement of the government building in Belgrade.
Kričak, who was heading this unit at the time, is suspected of personally leading the operation, hitting a student and threatening to rape her.
