The Bank of Albania has significantly increased its purchases of foreign exchange in the second quarter of the year. According to information on interventions in the money market, during the second quarter of this year, the Central Bank purchased a total of 161.6 million euros in the domestic foreign exchange market.
Of these, 122.1 million euros were purchases made through programmed auctions, in order to increase the foreign exchange reserve, while 72.7 million euros were direct purchases, in fulfillment of monetary policy and financial stability objectives.
On May 9 of this year, the Bank of Albania resumed direct purchases of foreign exchange in the market, with the aim of curbing the further strengthening of the Lek against the Euro.
Adding the 33.2 million euros purchased in the first quarter auctions, the total value of purchases for the first 6 months of 2025 has reached 194.8 million euros.
However, foreign exchange purchases this year are lower compared to the same period last year. For the first 6 months of 2024, the Central Bank had purchased 271.8 million euros in the domestic market. Last year also marked the highest historical value of foreign exchange purchases by the Central Bank, with a total amount of 933 million euros by the end of the year.
Foreign exchange purchases by the Bank of Albania have slowed the decline in the Euro-Lek exchange rate this year, but have not completely halted it. At the end of June, the European currency was trading at 98.08 Lek, down 2.2% year-on-year. During the third quarter of the year, the exchange rate fell further, reaching a new all-time low of 96.78 Lek in September.
During 2025, the Bank of Albania has scheduled a total of 22 auctions for foreign exchange purchases and so far 17 of them have been held.
The highest concentration of auctions has been in the months of July-August, when the foreign exchange supply is also greater. In total, the Bank of Albania aims to purchase through auctions 270-350 million euros, or 20 million euros more compared to the 2024 target, both in the lower and upper ranges.
However, the total amount of purchases will also be greatly influenced by the volume of direct purchases, in order to avoid further strengthening of the Lek in the exchange rate. According to market actors, direct purchases this year appear to be slightly lower, but still significant, as the figures for the second quarter of the year showed.
