How much lek did Albanians "spend" in restaurants and hotels? Increase

In recent years, the monthly expenses of Albanian families for hotels and restaurants have increased significantly. "Scan Intel" has analyzed the weight that this group has had in total expenses since 2019 and up to the latest data for 2023.

In 2019, the share of the "Restaurants and Hotels" group in total household expenses was 4.9%, while in 2020 it increased by 0.7 points. Over the course of five years, we see that the weight of this group in total expenses has increased by 2.5 percentage points, being estimated at 7.4% in 2023. This increase in consumption comes together with the good progress that tourism has had after the pandemic in our country, reaching records in the current year.

According to INSTAT, the monthly expenses of families in 2023 for this group are estimated at 6,755 ALL, from about 3,900 ALL in 2019. The increase in absolute figures is estimated at 2,700 ALL per month.

But how much did an Albanian family of 3.7 people spend per year on restaurants and hotels? From a simple calculation, we come to the conclusion that this figure reaches about 81 thousand lek per year, from about 77 thousand in 2022, or about 47 thousand five years ago.

If they consider the number of families, which according to the results of the 2023 Census was 755,950, we can calculate how much Albanians spent on this group. According to the figures analyzed by "Scan Intel", in total, Albanians spent on restaurants and hotels about 62 billion lek in 2023, from 36.7 billion in 2019.

So, in the span of five years, expenses for this group increased by 67%, or 24 billion ALL. If we convert it to the European currency, the value of the expenses reaches about 620 million euros or 247 million euros more than in 2019.
