"Call Center", the biggest place of employment for young Albanians in the last decade is shrinking. From over 16,000 employees in this sector in 2015, or almost 20,000 in 2018, the number of telephone operators has dropped to less than 10,000 this year.
"There are always fewer and fewer young people who want to work in this sector. Let's not forget that most of the market is concentrated in Italy. Italian-speakers are becoming rarer. This is because of the young generations of 18-20 years old who do not know this language", says Tonin Preci.
The change in the type of activity, from sales or customer service to exchanges and other fraudulent schemes, efforts which have been discovered by SPAK, are another reason for the shrinking of this sector.
The number of companies operating as call centers fell to 508 from 848 in 2015.
"It has affected the deterioration of the sector's image. But I want to tell young people not to become part of these fraudulent schemes as they will get involved in criminal activities", adds Preçi, writes A2.
However, many young people continue to consider "Call Center" as the only jobs that are freely available and you can work with reduced hours to earn a minimum wage, alongside education.
"After trying to get a job in the administration, with the many bureaucracies, in the end I decided to work in the call center. It's a good and fast salary", says one of them.
The call center sector developed after 2010, after Italian companies transferred their activity to Albania, taking advantage of the cheap labor cost and knowledge of foreign languages.
