The latest survey published by the "Barometer of the Balkans 2024", on the expectations of the citizens of the Western Balkans for membership in the European Union, highlights some interesting data, especially for Albania. Albanians seem to have a similar approach compared to their neighbors when it comes to the potential benefits of EU membership.
Specifically, in Albania, 58% of respondents hope that EU membership will bring new investments and economic growth in the country. 32% of them expect it to offer them freedom of movement. The freedom to travel across borders and explore new job markets is one of the main motivations that lead them to support this process.
Likewise, 43% of Albanian citizens see the EU as an opportunity to study and work in the member countries, thus encouraging aspirations for a better academic and professional future.
"Scan Intel" has also analyzed the figures for the expectations of other citizens of the Western Balkans. According to the data, in Kosovo, the expectations of 24% of citizens are related to the freedom to travel, while in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, citizens have expectations similar to those of Albanians in terms of economic improvements.
It is interesting that in Montenegro, only 21% of citizens mention freedom of movement, while the highest percentage of interest in economic prosperity is in Serbia with 36%.
Another aspect that stands out is the expectation for political stability and peace, which is less pronounced for Albania (only 16%). In conclusion, we conclude that Albanians see EU membership as a path to a better life, with special emphasis on freedom of movement, study and economic prosperity.
