The fall of the euro in the exchange rate with the lek deepened even more on Tuesday.
According to the official exchange rate of the Bank of Albania, the euro was exchanged for ALL 111.34, decreasing by 0.47 points compared to Monday and touching a new historical minimum.
Since the beginning of the year, the exchange rate of the euro has fallen by 2.5%, while compared to the same period a year ago, the fall of the euro has reached 7.6%.
Agents of the foreign exchange market testify to a very high supply of foreign currency and especially the euro.
Abundant supply of currency has been a constant feature in the foreign exchange market since last year, but in recent weeks this supply has been increasing even more.
According to experts, this can be explained by an increase in income from tourism, the annual seasonal effect of the Easter holidays, but perhaps also the field for the local elections on May 14.
According to them, the periods before the elections are associated with increased flows of euros in the foreign exchange market, although it is difficult to identify the source of these flows.
The fall in the euro rate and the appreciation of the local currency have significant impacts on the economy.
The euro is the dominant currency in the country's foreign trade exchanges, and the appreciation of the lek against it makes imports cheaper and continues to amortize part of the increase in the price of goods from foreign markets.
The strong lek is one of the factors why Albania has lower inflation levels compared to neighboring economies and those of the European Union countries.
The strong lek also has a positive effect on the imports of services and especially tourism, making it more profitable for Albanians to travel and rest abroad.
Another segment that is benefiting significantly from the strengthening of the lek is that of borrowers in foreign currency.
Especially in the family segment, most of them have income in Lek and this causes the appreciation of the local currency to reduce their spending for the monthly loan installment.
A household that has a loan in euros with a fixed interest rate today pays almost 8% less than it did a year ago.
One of the biggest beneficiary borrowers is the Albanian government itself.
In theory, this causes the value of savings, expressed in Lek, to decrease, but depositors do not seem to be very sensitive to this effect, perhaps also due to the euroization of the domestic economy and the fact that most assets with stable value in time quoted in euros./Monitor
