From the rain of Memolla, to the hail of Veliaj!

In a weather like these days, you don't think about rain, let alone hail. But the phraseological expression "from rain to hail" immediately comes to mind, after the deep defeat of the opposition candidate yesterday in Rrogozhin.

On May 14, Rrogozhina was the municipality where the SP won with the narrowest margin - only 21 votes. And the opposition put the blame for this narrow loss on the voting center in Rrogozhina prison, where the socialist candidate had received a majority of votes. After many battles in the media and in the CEC and the Electoral College, the opposition managed to re-enter in repeated elections in Rrogozhin, in which the prison was completely excluded from voting.

In the weeks and days before the elections, opposition politicians and analysts close to it considered the victory of Shkëlqim Hoxha in Rrogozhin almost certain, arguing that Memolla would no longer have the votes of the prisoners and that the votes of immigrants who had recently arrived to visit their families would be skewed by the opposition. But they did not factor in their arguments Erion Veliajn...

Before the May 14 elections, Veliaj, as the political leader of the district of Tirana, campaigned in the five municipalities of the district, but concentrated mainly on the capital and Kamëz, the two largest municipalities of the district. In Vorë and Rrogozhinë, where the SP had won the by-elections with 69% and 61% of the votes, respectively, Veliaj spent much less time during the campaign, delegating the work mainly to the socialist candidates themselves, as well as to politicians assigned to cover these small municipalities.

In Vorë, the socialist candidate won on May 14 almost 74% of the valid votes, while in Rrogozhinë only 50.1% of the votes. On May 14, the socialist Memolla received almost as many votes as he had received in years, but this time he faced a much stronger opponent, who almost brought the result to a tie...

And now we come to July 23.

In the hot days of this July, Veliaj held 3-4 electoral meetings a day in Rrogozhin, activating all the local socialist politicians and activists. From urban to rural areas, from inland to coastal areas, Veliaj campaigned relentlessly, urging leftist voters who had not voted on May 14th to go vote on July 23rd. And this tireless campaigning of Veliaj paid off in Sunday's result.

The socialist Memolla received 1,529 more votes than he had received on May 14, while the oppositionist Hoxha received almost as many votes as he had received on May 14 (see accompanying table). In other words, the increase in participation on Sunday (compared to May 14) was transferred entirely to the increase in socialist votes...

The opposition faced on May 14 in Rrogozinë mainly with the rain of Memollaj, and for a little while, it could have come out wet. While on July 23, he faced the hail of Veliaj, and came out angry...
