"We need more "polishers" than journalists"

"We need more "polishers" than journalists"

One Saturday morning….

Gzim is the polisher who works on the sidewalk behind the National Museum in Tirana.

It's been a while since I've had my shoes shined at the shoe shine shop.

-Do you have work?- I asked.

"Very little," he said.

"You're right," I said, "I've been doing this myself for years. Ever since those tubes of paint and brushes we buy in stores came out."

-Not only that - said Gzimi. The athlete's neck got us. Everyone has come out in sneakers. Girls, girls, women and men. Look, while you're sitting, only two men have passed by in shoes.

Gzim looks at passersby by their feet, what they are wearing, because he works with other people's feet.

-Here's the guy who's wearing shoes, he polished them himself. He didn't do it well, but he did them himself.

"I don't have a pension," he continues, "I have nothing to do, I've been doing this job for 20 years. I'll work here as long as I can."

Cities once teemed with jewelers-

-Come on, glass. -Glass here!

Times change. The polisher has almost disappeared as a profession.

How many professions will AI eliminate now?

Anyway, I promised Gzim that I would come to shine his shoes more often, since I very rarely wear sneakers.

While I was throwing these lines at Gzim, I remembered that I, like Gzim, have worked without insurance for at least 10 years. And I have been a journalist without a job. Should I also take up a profession? - I thought - that retirement is unknown. That there is no need for journalists in Albania anymore.
