On Sunday, only the media knew that there were partial local elections in five cities in Albania.
According to figures published by the CEC, even the citizens of Vlora, Berat, Tepelena, Cerrik and Mati did not want to know about the elections.
Referring to statistics from 350 thousand registered voters, a total of more or less 60 thousand votes ended up in the ballot box.
Referring to the 2023 local elections, the turnout was 38.23%, while in 2019, when the Socialist Party voted alone after the Democratic Party and the SMI boycotted the elections, the turnout was 22.96%.
Prime Minister and leader of the Socialist Party, Edi Rama, justified the non-participation of citizens in the elections due to bad weather.
Meanwhile, the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has chosen to remain silent, ignoring these elections as if they had never happened.
Both party leaders did not participate in the election campaign at all, except for a podcast by Rama where he told the candidates that we would win by about 100% and they gave their figures.
These by-elections had no electoral meetings, no opening or closing of the campaign, no commercials, and no public debate in the media.
The opposition did not even have its own candidates, but supported several independent candidates, failing to directly engage its electorate.
In this way, political parties did nothing to motivate citizens, thus dealing a serious moral blow to the process, as a mayor who is elected with less than 20% of the vote no longer represents the majority of the citizens of the municipality he will lead.
Citizens are giving clear signals identifying a Socialist Party ravaged by scandals and silent internal conflicts and a DP that is shirking its responsibilities.
Now let's come to the conclusion of these elections that citizens did not vote in but that cost Albanians millions of euros.
The five losers of these elections are the Socialist Party (Their candidates did not arouse any enthusiasm among the citizens of Berat, Mati, Cerrik, Tepelena or Vlora. In the latter, the Socialist Party suffered a defeat when in the 2023 elections it won with more than 28 thousand votes, it ended with over 15 thousand votes. So it seems that the citizens of these municipalities are not satisfied with the administration of these municipalities nor with the newly elected mayors.)
The Democratic Party (this party is also the biggest loss as it failed to even take the municipality of Mati, which they led for several terms before. But not only that, their voters almost didn't turn out at all, which seems to have made them accept defeat).
The citizens of these municipalities also lost the opportunity to punish their discontented with negative or invalid votes, sending a clear message that things are not going well.
The Albanian budget minus 306 million lek for some formal elections where all that was talked about was how much % we would win and no one said how we would improve the lives of the citizens of these municipalities.
Independent candidates (under the umbrella of the DP) were used simply to legitimize the elections, since the winners were known.
The five winners and their entourage are the only ones who are satisfied with these elections as they will enjoy the offices of the municipality and fulfill the wishes of their friends with tenders.
This Sunday's elections demonstrated the public's disgust with politics and its conviction that it cannot expect solutions from political parties or their leaders. So the candidate won and the voters lost .
