He's not a "Muslim", he's a socialist

Zohran Mamdani

Zohran Mamdani, the winner of the New York elections, was presented in some Albanian media as "the Muslim who won in the USA."

It should be emphasized that Mamdan is not at all represented by what is before God, his success has nothing to do with religion. Even if he wanted to, a city like New York, built on millions of immigrants, cannot be guided by prejudices of origin or faith.

To put it in a biographical context, he is of Muslim origin. His father is from Uganda with Indian-Muslim roots, while his mother is Indian. But he himself has never made religion part of his public profile, never uses it as a political identity and rarely mentions it in interviews.

Mamdani is a SOCIALIST. Even “worse”: He is a socialist who has won the heart of the country that invented modern capitalism. His presentation first as a “Muslim” certainly plays well with those who try to cultivate in the “masses” that social policy is naive, that state welfare is “communist,” that social justice is “romanticism,” etc., etc. Mamdani as a socialist spoils the moral comfort of these “elites.”

Moreover, Mamdani openly acknowledges his political identity. He is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a left-wing movement that is trying to move the American Democratic Party towards a more social model, with an emphasis on economic equality and the strengthening of public services.

Here are some of Mamdan's promises:

Increase taxes on the wealthy and use them for public services such as housing, transportation, and healthcare. Opposes privatization and demands that essential services be in the hands of the state or local residents. Protects the rights of workers and unions, as well as policies for immigrants and the poor classes.

It is impossible to read this and not notice the contrast between socialism as an idea and socialism as a political “brand”. Here we come to Albania. The promises of Zohran Mamdani, in Albania governed for 12 years by socialists, are forgotten dreams. We only need to remember what happens to public assets. Albanian “socialism” is selling its own house.

In any case, the victory of a new socialist, born from the mixture of cultures and ideals in a country that for decades has been the symbol of unlimited capitalism, shows that the idea of ??democratic socialism is a real alternative to the current system. It is a sign of hope that the era of cynical politics and division is facing a new countercurrent. It gives courage to all those in every corner of the world, from Latin America to Europe, from Africa to the Balkans, who still believe that the state should be an instrument of justice, not a business of the strong.

“Ordinary” people want institutions that serve the majority, not the minority. The younger generation wants more equality, less arrogance from power. This sentiment is not American. It is universal. The way forward is not “more markets” or “more profits,” but more society.

Politics will be saved not by ideology, but by human feeling.
