Serbia's turn has begun

Serbia's turn has begun
Writer and publicist, Ivan Ivanji

On May 9, 2022, Serbia, as every year, will celebrate the victory over Nazi Germany in 1945 - however, this time against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, this holiday will be without Russian flags and guests of honor from Russia.

When Russia launched its offensive against Ukraine, I wondered how the president of Yugoslavia, who died in 1980, would have celebrated his liberation this year if he were still alive. As the first images of Ukrainian cities involved in the fighting arrived in Serbia, I compared this to the situation here after the NATO bombing of Kosovo in 1999.

Some things are really comparable: people die, hospitals and television stations, bridges and oil refineries are destroyed by fighter jets and missiles. But in the end what is happening since February 24, 2022 in Ukraine reminds me of the German cities destroyed in 1945. At that time I was in Halberstadt, Magdeburg, Hamburg, Frankfurt, climbed to the bell tower of Cologne Cathedral and fixed the image of the terrible state of the city.

Even the escape of millions of Ukrainians and Ukrainians reminds me of refugees and deportees at the end of World War II. Also, please do not forget Syria, where for eleven years circumstances like these have prevailed in Ukraine for eleven weeks. Do not forget the people, who escape from there and drown in the Mediterranean Sea, instead of finding a safe haven in Europe. Let us not forget the millions and many millions of children, who are born to suffer for months, and then die of hunger ...

Compared to all this, we in Serbia have only the concern, how much milk and sunflower oil will cost in the future. If we could heat the houses next winter. Serbia receives gas from Russia - meanwhile at a low price, which is not even one-fifth of the market price, but the supply agreement expires on May 31, 2022. After that it must be renegotiated with the Russian state concern Gazprom. The only oil refinery in Serbia belongs to this concern, as well as various chemical plants.

An old need for support

Friendly relations between Serbia and Russia - or rather: Serbia's need for support from Russia - have existed for centuries. That alone would not be a problem if the government of President Aleksandar Vucic had not followed the cult of Russian President Vladimir Putin for decades, which now makes the citizens of Serbia continue to be fans of the strong man in Moscow and consider the attack on Ukraine fair.

Vucic has met Putin 19 times in recent years. But the much-desired money actually comes from the West, mainly from the European Union. So far, Vucic has managed to play the "both with and with" game between Brussels and Moscow. But now Serbia needs to reorient itself - and has even started to do so.

And what would Tito have done in this situation on this year's anniversary of liberation from Nazi occupation? I'm sure: he would condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine, just as he condemned the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968. And he would impose sanctions on the regime in Moscow.
