Clergy of religious faiths in Albania

Albanian diplomat Mal Berisha has reacted to the news that Prime Minister Edi Rama plans to provide the Bektashis of Albania with their own sovereign territory in Tirana.

He has brought to attention the memories of 1993 from his book, as he confesses that he was present at the meeting of the heads of the religious faiths of Albania in Istanbul.

Berisha says that at that time, it was Archbishop Anastas Janullatos who put forward the idea that Albania should be known as a country with four religions, adding the Bektashi one, which was opposed at the time by the leaders of other faiths, including Baba Reshat Bardhi.

The comment of former ambassador Mal Berisha:

AN ANTI-NATIONAL WEED SEED PLANTED IN ISTANBUL IN 1993 SEEMS TO HAVE GROWN ON US NOW, IN 2024.

 STATE OF "BEKTASHINI" INSIDE ALBANIA?!

Dear friends!

As I am hearing and reading the idea of ??an Albanian Bektashi state, within the territory of the Albanian State, I decided to return to an event that has exactly this subject, which I witnessed in the fall of 1993, at the Marmara Hotel, in Istanbul .

Here is the full story as I experienced it and published it in my book "Soft Power Ambassador" on page 73.

MEETING OF MONOTHEIST FAITH IN ISTANBUL, AUTUMN, 1993

In the fall of 1993, a meeting of heads of monotheistic religions was organized in Istanbul. The leaders of the Abrahamic religions would participate there, from the Head of the Rabbinate of Israel, then Bartholomew I, the Head of the Orthodox Church of Istanbul, the Chief Mufti of Turkey, while the Secretary General of the Vatican had come from the Holy See. The main personalities of these religions participated from Albania:

PARTICIPANTS FROM ALBANIA:

The first was Hafiz Sabri Koçi, the Chief Mufti of Albania. Then came Monsignor Rrok Mirdita, head of the Albanian Catholic religion, and Anastasios Janullatos, head of the Albanian Orthodox Church. The head of the World Chief Justice of the Bektashi, Dede Reshat Bardhi, had also come with them.

THE MEETING OF THE BELIEVERS

A somber spirit of a religious nature permeated the meeting with great calmness and humility. The heads of religions of different countries met with each other, especially within their own religions, but also in interaction. The religions of the Albanians were as if wounded after a long period when they had passed into atheism, in the first and only state in the world, which was declared as such. Hafiz Sabri Koçi, 72 years old, was coming from his long life of 23 years in prison because of his religious belief. He was a theologian, a martyr of religion, a very learned man, well-educated, cultured, very wise and humble. Dede Reshat Bardhi had also gone through an ordeal of suffering because of his faith and practiced his religion completely in secret, but never left it, regardless of the consequences he suffered. Monsignor Rrok Mirdita was the head of the Diocese of Durrës and Tirana, consecrated by Pope John Paul II. He had started serving the Catholic Church at the age of 25. He had spent many years serving in the Catholic Church in the Bronx in New York. He is the initiator of the construction of St. Paul's Cathedral in Tirana. According to his idea, it has three corners, which symbolize the coexistence between the three religions in Albania, Islamic, Orthodox and Catholic.

Archbishop Anastasios Janullatos, born in 1929, was the Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all of Albania and the Head of the Synod of the Albanian Orthodox Autocephalous Church. He also held many titles as a member of several academies. His name was mentioned with great skepticism as a usurper of the throne of the head of the Albanian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, which Fan Noli once founded and Visarion Xhuvani kept alive. In that meeting, many issues related to religious peace and interfaith harmony were discussed. In this case, a discussion was opened, which is worth noting in this narrative.

THE PROPOSAL FOR THE FOURTH MONOTHEIST ALBANIAN BEKTASIAN RELIGION OF ARCHBISHOP ANASTASIOS JANULLATOS

The heads of the Albanian religions, even though there are only three of them, it seemed to us that there "were" four. The Archbishop of the Albanian Orthodox Church said that there are four different religions in Albania. After many discussions, a joint resolution of the monotheistic religions had to be signed. According to some leaders there, the Albanians had to sign all four. But in reality we had three religions, not four, despite the fact that Dede Reshat Bardhi represented a liberal sect of Islam - that is, Bektashism. Someone was interested in adding a religion to the Albanians. This was a strategy that suited those who Albanians have always wanted to divide. This was a good opportunity to consider them divided into four religions.

IZOT RROK MIRDITA – THE STUPID ALBANIAN PATRIOT

Monsignor Rrok Mirdita asked for a break for a consultation. He gathered us, Hafiz Sabri, Dede Reshati and the two of us from the Consulate, Orhan Zarshati and me. It was a difficult situation, as we were very worried that Dede Reshat would be left with hatr, if Bektashism was not introduced as a separate religion. Monsignor Rrok Mirdita explained it very nicely and with a true national and patriotic spirit. Then Orhan Zarshati focused on the history of the Grand Duchess and why she, in 1924, moved from Istanbul to Albania. In the end, he said, the religious division among Albanians favors Albania's enemies. Dede Reshat immediately jumped and said:

BABA RESHAT BADHI:

BEKTASHISM IS NOT A PARTICULAR RELIGION IN ALBANIA - I NEVER AGREE TO BE PART OF AN ACTION THAT DAMAGES MY COUNTRY IN ANY WAY.

"You are wise people of my homeland. You know this business better than I do. I never agree to be a part of an action that harms my country in the slightest. I am a Bektashi, I am a believer of the Islamic religion, but first of all I am an Albanian".

Thus the mention of Albania as a country with four religions was avoided in the Istanbul Resolution. It was noted there that Albania has three monotheistic religions. "Someone" was the initiator of that anti-Albanian thesis at the conference. After that he left with his head down.

Note: That weed of that time seems to have been no accident. At least let's say it because to stop the rollover of our nation it seems that we will not be able to stop it. But at least let's not be silent!
