At least 85 prosecutors and magistrates have addressed a letter to the General Prosecutor's Office and the High Prosecutorial Council, requesting the holding of the General Meeting of Prosecutors of the Republic of Albania.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss issues related to the security and protection of magistrates, following the murder of Judge Astrit Kalaja while on duty.

In their request to the Attorney General, the prosecutors emphasize that the tragic event has exposed serious gaps in the security system. They underline that it is necessary to convene a meeting to coordinate a unified response to the risks affecting the security of magistrates and the integrity of the justice system.

According to the request, the purpose of the meeting is to review the current security situation in the premises of the prosecutors' offices and strengthen the guarantees for the protection of the life, integrity and functional independence of magistrates. The prosecutors propose several points to be addressed at the meeting, including. physical security in the premises of the prosecutors' offices, including access control, security equipment and the presence of judicial police forces or the State Police. The magistrates request the conditions of transport and movement of prosecutors, as well as the need for compensation or institutional support for transport and accommodation.

They also demand the revision of security standards in line with European Union practices.

The document also requires that concrete measures be taken to guarantee minimum conditions of security, confidentiality and dignity in the exercise of duty.

Prosecutors request that the meeting also address the issue of hate speech against magistrates and prosecutors, manifested from time to time by political representatives, the media, and online portals.

Meanwhile, following the murder of Judge Kalaja, the Meeting of Judges of Albania is expected to take place tomorrow, where security measures in justice institutions will be discussed.
