Albanian public opinion was shocked on Monday, October 6, with the murder inside the courtroom at the Tirana Court of Appeals of Judge Astrit Kalaja.
The 62-year-old was executed with three bullets after giving a ruling on a property case by 30-year-old Elvis Shkambi. The latter also injured two other people, a father and son, who were parties to the legal process.
But this is not the first case where justice has been targeted.
The series of assassinations that began in 1999 and continues to this day shows a bitter reality: not even the figures of justice in Albania have been protected in the face of crime.
With simple research, you realize that many of these crimes are filled with mystery and have not yet been solved.
February 19, 1999 – The macabre murder of Kozeta Hyseni
One of the most serious incidents occurred in the Student City, where 21-year-old Kozeta Hyseni, daughter of Vlora prosecutor Luftar Hyseni, was found murdered. The evening before, a girl had informed her that someone was looking for her under the building where she lived. After leaving the room, Kozeta never returned.
Her body was found the next morning, brutally beaten with stones on the head. The incident was never solved and it is still unknown whether it was related to her father's duty.
February 21, 1999 – Kleanthi Koçi is executed
Just two days after the murder of Kozeta, another assassination attempt struck the “heart” of justice. A person approached him, said something to him and shot him dead. This crime was never solved either.
