The arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, has appealed to the Special Court a letter from SPAK that rejected his request to be allowed to meet with foreign lawyers in order to prepare the procedure before the Strasbourg Court.

Veliaj has been indicted by the Special Prosecution Office on 5 charges, including corruption, money laundering, concealment of assets, abuse of office, and introducing illegal items into the place of serving his sentence.

He is defended by two lawyers, Ermir Beta and Artur Selmani, but through a request addressed to SPAK, he also claimed to meet with the lawyers of two foreign studios, which he has agreed to prepare his file for Strasbourg.

SPAK has rejected Veliaj's request, arguing that the law only allows for two lawyers, and that for a foreign lawyer to defend him in court, he must first be registered with a law firm in Albania and must be from one of the countries that are part of the European Union.

Veliaj has appealed against the SPAK decision and it is expected that Judge Erion Bani will make a decision regarding his request, that is, whether he will allow a meeting of foreign lawyers with the Mayor of Tirana in the Durrës detention facility.

SPAK has closed the investigations into Veliaj, his wife Ajola Xoxa, and 28 other individuals, companies, and NGOs. The case is expected to be submitted within the month for trial at the Special Court.
