The Head of the Special Prosecution Office, Altin Dumani, has stated that with the Justice Reform, impunity is being shaken in Albania.

Dumani made the comments at the ceremony marking the completion of the vetting of prosecutors and judges, a process that will be the responsibility of the head of SPAK from December 31st.

Dumani also said that with the Justice Reform, democracy has increased and the path has been paved for the country's integration into the EU.

The head of SPAK also said that during its journey, SPAK has faced many challenges, which, according to him, have neither deterred nor scared the prosecutors.

"Honorable ambassadors, members of the Independent Qualification Commission and honorable public commissioners. I must share with you some reflections on a process that shaped our justice system. It was decisive in having a stronger democracy and in making the path to the EU safer.

7 years is not a short time, but the Justice Reform was transformative to describe one of the most comprehensive processes, to bring a fair and professional justice system to Albanian citizens. The KPK and the KPA have set by their example a cornerstone on which the justice institutions would be built. SPAK is an independent institution and all 20 prosecutors have undergone the vetting process.

Impunity is being shaken today. The road confronts us every day with new challenges, which have neither scared us nor discouraged us. One of the priorities of SPAK from December 31 is the administration of the role of public commissioners. All unfinished issues of the re-evaluation of magistrates will be passed to the head of SPAK. So far, 40 appeals have been counted. It is anticipated that the head of SPAK will have a major role in representing these issues before the Special Appeals Chamber”, said Dumani.

Meanwhile, the United States envoy to Albania, Nancy VanHorn, called on SPAK to continue investigating the most sensitive corruption issues.

"There has been much resistance to justice reform and this resistance continues to this day in some countries. Commissioners and judges have made great sacrifices, both professional and personal, by making unpopular decisions. They have shown immense courage. The Albanian people should know that officials of abomination are being held accountable every day and this will continue thanks to the work of courageous Albanians like you. Everyone should be proud," she said at the closing ceremony of the vetting process.

But, according to her, the vetting is not over. "SPAK must continue to investigate the most sensitive corruption cases, holding accountable those who have abused their positions, regardless of politics and favoritism," she said.
