The great demographic movements of the population have influenced that in many areas in Albania the majority of the inhabitants are over 65 years old.
Gjirokastra is one of these municipalities where a pilot project has been launched to improve integrated services for the elderly. The project is supported by the United Nations Health Program and includes 5 municipalities and local health and social services institutions.
Some time ago, a group of elderly people from Dropulli i Sipërm in Gjirokastër asked the Municipality to establish the urban service for 17 villages in this area, interrupted for several years.
"The bus came to Kosovica twice a day. After 30 years of democracy, we don't have a bus, we don't have a car. Why? Who will give us an answer, the municipality or the government", says Vangjeli, a resident of this area.
While another resident says that the elderly need services, to buy food, make medical visits, take medicine and they lack urban transport from their remote villages to the city of Gjirokastra. They can't afford it by taxi, he says, since the pension is enough for four trips a month to Gjirokastër.
The problems of the elderly in many areas affected by mass immigration have become even more sensitive recently due to the new situation of rising prices, especially of food and transport.
Finiq has about 70% of elderly residents, says Katerina Thedhori, who covers social services in this Municipality.
"Before the pandemic, we didn't know how necessary the help of the municipality was for the elderly. Seeing the country after the end of the pandemic, a very big burden fell on the municipality and those tasks that their children did with medicine, with food, with everything that an elderly person needs, including when he is sick and needs services, the entire burden fell on the municipality."
Mrs. Thedhori says that even this period after the pandemic is accompanied by an increase in prices and the elderly find it difficult to afford living without the help of family members in emigration.
"The income they have, they don't even have enough for medicine, without the help of their children who have emigrated. The increase in prices makes their position more difficult."
But the circumstances created, such as by the pandemic where many elderly people were isolated from their family members in emigration due to the difficulties of movement and now by the economic crisis, it can be seen that they have further increased the challenges for this category of the population./VOA
