A tragic event has occurred in Italy, where 20-year-old Thomas Qirjaj, of Albanian origin, lost his life after a serious accident on the A1 highway.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Friday, October 30, near the Melegnano area, towards San Giuliano Milanese.

According to Italian media, the young man was traveling with four friends in a Volvo with Swiss license plates. After they crossed the highway barrier, the car lost control and crashed into the divider that separates the lanes.

After the collision, Thomas got out of the vehicle to set up the warning triangle and signal the danger to other drivers.

But in those moments, he was hit by an SUV, driven by a 25-year-old from Modena, who, according to the preliminary reconstruction of the event, failed to recognize the young man on the road until the last moment.

The collision was extremely serious. The 20-year-old was rushed to the Predabissi hospital in Vizzolo, but died from his injuries, despite the doctors' efforts to save him.

The four friends traveling with him did not suffer serious injuries.

Thomas Qirjaj was born in Piacenza and lived with his parents in Caorso, in the province of Piacenza. He came from a family of Albanian origin and was an only child. He would have turned 21 in December.

The news of his death has shocked the community where he lived. The mayor of Caorso, Roberta Battaglia, expressed her condolences to the family, remembering Thomas as a young man who had seen him grow up and who had integrated well into the community.

The young man had also been involved in amateur football, while the club he had played for decided to cancel the planned match as a sign of mourning.

The Italian Traffic Police and the Lodi Prosecutor's Office have launched investigations to fully elucidate the dynamics of the accident. Authorities are examining the causes that led to the initial collision of the Volvo vehicle with the highway divider, as well as the circumstances in which the SUV hit the young man.

According to Italian media, the driver of the SUV will also undergo toxicological tests as part of the investigative procedures.
