The parents and brother of 12-year-old Zenaida Selimaj , who was burned alive by her Albanian neighbor 14 years ago, appeared angry before the start of the hearing at the Piraeus Court, which is taking place today.

"I couldn't see the perpetrator. I was at work that day. After I returned, I didn't recognize my daughter because she was so badly burned, I only recognized her by her nails ," said the minor's mother.

While the 12-year-old's father said about the defendant Adrian Zeko that  "He came to our house every night and when we were in the hospital he asked us: 'Is Zenaida talking? What do the police say?' He wanted to learn many things . "

Zenaida's brother added that "we have always been together. We had seen him sometimes looking at her. God delays, but he does not forget. "Justice will come."

The 63-year-old, who was the victim's neighbor, will sit in the dock 14 years after the macabre crime.

He is charged with murder in a state of mental indifference, intentional arson, attempted rape and seduction of a minor under 14 years of age.

On September 23, 2011, Albanian girl Zenaida Selimaj, just 12 years old, was found with burns covering 80% of her body on the stairs of the building where she lived with her parents and younger brother.

She was taken to the State General Hospital of Nice and then to the "Agia Sophia" Children's Hospital, where she died after 13 days.

Initially, it was suspected that Zenaida had committed suicide due to a handwritten note from the minor found in her home.

However, the investigation took a turn and focused on the girl's close family circle, after it was discovered that the minor had been painted with turpentine and then set on fire using a lighter.

Contradictions in the statements of the minor's grandfather, who was the last person to see her before she was set on fire, as well as the statement of Zenaida's father, resulted in his criminal prosecution.

However, the minor's grandfather was found not guilty. About nine years later, the horror was revealed through a photograph of a man who went public with another crime he committed against a minor.

The indictment states:  "The defendant's house had a balcony with direct access to the minor's balcony. According to witness statements, he had molested the girl in the previous period. As for his presence on the stairs where the minor was set on fire, he immediately recognized Zenaida despite the fact that she had burns on 80% of her body, at a time when her parents could not identify her except by the nails and earrings she was wearing. Further, the defendant claimed from the beginning that the 13-year-old had started the fire herself, while he claimed to his family and relatives that he had tried to put out the fire with his hands and wrapped it in gauze. After the incident and during the minor's hospitalization, the defendant went to her house every day, constantly asking her family if the victim had reported anything to the police."

"He was acting and making fun of us. I want him to pay for what he did to my daughter. He did it and he has to pay. I don't know if I have the strength to face him in court. He was making fun of us. I want him to be punished because he erased our daughter's smile forever,"  Zenaida's mother told protothema.gr.

According to the indictment, after the defendant seduced Zenaida and attempted to rape her, he then chased her down the stairs of her house and burned her alive, as the minor attempted to escape.

"After attempting to have involuntary intercourse with the minor, he committed sexual acts against her, but before she strongly resisted in defense of her sexual freedom and attempted to flee through the stairs of her house, he burned her to hide any incriminating evidence on her body from his previous criminal act, using a flammable liquid and then set her on fire."

"We saw the burnt child..."

Relatives, neighbors, and friends of the family of the unfortunate girl, who was murdered in this brutal way, spoke in front of the "Tunnel" camera.

" As soon as I saw our neighbor's picture on TV, all the pictures came back to me of what my niece and I had suffered. The child was found naked from the waist up. The parents recognized her by her nails and earrings. We never thought she would set herself on fire. It was murder, I said it from the beginning and I say it now. I have taken an oath to find the killer,"  said the uncle of the 12-year-old girl.

" Suddenly we saw the little girl burned on the stairs .  She was taken to the hospital alive, but after a few days she left.... A child who was burned... He was a very sweet creature ," the family's neighbor emphasized.

" I can't bear to leave the house anymore because I remember what happened to our child. We have so many years and we are waiting to learn the truth. Let's find out who did this to our little girl ," said the sad parents.

The father of the unfortunate little girl described the tragic moment when he found her burned on the steps of their home.

"The door of the apartment was open, but there were no signs of fire in the house. They set my child on fire. She was trying to escape down the stairs and she didn't make it. It was a targeted action. I saw next to her that she is now in prison for another crime. They were talking to the other neighbor and they didn't let me hear her last words,"  he said.

"We didn't have a bottle of turpentine at home. Our neighbor definitely had it in his apartment because he was a painter. I saw his hands that were burned. Then EKAB came and took our daughter. I was in shock,"  the father added.

Residents of Kallikratida Street in Piraeus are upset. With the publication of the photo of their pedophile neighbor, memories of that brutal murder are being awakened.

The victim's uncle describes what the family's neighbors and witnesses to the tragic event told him. One of the two is the perpetrator, whose details were recently made public for the rape of another child.

The mother of the unfortunate 12-year-old says something shocking on the show's camera.

" A month ago, my daughter told me that this neighbor was looking at me strangely. He was looking at her and she didn't like him because he was scaring her ."

At the end of December 2020, the Greek Police published, following a relevant order from the Piraeus Prosecutor's Office, the man's identity data and photo.

He is Adrian Zeko, 59, from Albania, who is accused of repeated rape without the victim's consent and of sexual acts with a minor under the age of twelve.
